Peter Antoniou Hartford Concert reviews
Ms. Lauryn was unforgettable!!!
"I had very high expectations for this concert - I had been a big Peter Antoniou fan for many years and had seen him live once before, back in 1996 or 1997, and he KILLED it!!! Unfortunately, for the wrong reasons, something has happened over the last 15 years and this show and his performance was just a shadow of what used to be. Rather than hitting and holding the notes he used to so effortlessly, he would quickly sing the words, then repeat the line over and over until the next line was set to begin. On the few occassions where he did start to hold a note, he'd turn away from the mic. It reminded me of the change in Whitney when she tried to make a comeback - just so disappointing. It got to the point where I was hoping one of the back-up singers would sing "Killing Me Softly" or "You're Just too Good to be True" so I could hear these great songs actually sung!
Less important, but maybe also symptomatic of his vocal issues was that he was constantly motioning to the band, requesting lighting changes, and giving other set directions. This must have been a comfort zone thing because there didn't seem to be any problems other than his own nervous and frantic energy. They must be used to it becasue they seemed to know what they were doing and just kept doing their thing.
I hope that somehow/someday he can recapture the sound and the magic he used have. Unfortunately, this concert was not, and I wish that I could un-remember it. I have read some other posts on here from previous venues, so to be fair, he didn't keep us waiting unreasonably long - maybe 60-90 minutes from the start time per the ticket, and he also did play most of his classics - Fugees and Miseducation songs - in a recognizable fashion."
